“Product Safety”
Program
Summary: The presentation will discuss incorporating Product Safety into equipment design. Typical design solutions will be presented for EMC and Product Safety to highlight areas where the two technical requirements are harmonious and where they create technical challenges.
Although the two technical areas of EMC and Product Safety are regulated by three different federal agencies, EMC by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), safety by the Occupational Safety and Hazards Administration (OSHA) and EMC and safety for medical products by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), their requirements have become intermingled through the application of technology.

Speaker: Mike Cantwell is a Sr. Account Manager with Intertek, ETS SEMKO in Richardson Texas, a graduate of the University of Lowell with a Bachelor's of Electrical Engineering, a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the EMC and Product Safety Societies, a NARTE Certified EMC Engineer and also a Licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Texas and Massachusetts. He also performs EMC laboratory assessments for NVLAP as a consultant to the US Department of Commerce..
For over twenty years, Mike has worked as a design engineer, consultant, and test engineer in the development of hundreds of products such as computers, high-speed servers and switches, biventricular heart pumps, medical robots, network equipment, and much more. His experience in systems interconnect, integration, and EMC/Immunity engineering has been demonstrated on many high performance products. This engineering involved the evaluation and measurement of processor and I/O designs at the board, backplane, enclosure, and overall system levels.
Mike has managed and developed EMC laboratories at Digital Equipment Corporation, RheinTexas (now NTS), and Flextronics (now TUV Rheinland).
