Summary:
EMI measurements typically performed in EMC test laboratories are time consuming but necessary to ensure correct measurements of devices that could emit both narrowband and broadband emissions. In contrast, broadband time-domain EMI (TDEMI) measurement systems measure the entire spectrum at the receiver input and have been shown to yield precompliance measurements with statistical approximations of quasipeak and average detection under certain conditions. Conventional frequency domain measurements take a very long time. While time-domain techniques employing FFT have the potential to significantly reduce the measurement time, they are not acceptable for measuring compliance with CISPR 16-1-1. It is possible that combining both frequency- and time-domain techniques into a single instrument may become a useful tool to reduce product development time and cost.
