Program Summary:  Today's backplane environment presents significant challenges for high speed digital designers. Trade-offs between signal integrity performance, cost and reliability must be made to achieve the proper architecture for a robust physical layer channel. The right combination of connectors, dielectric materials and topology must be used to accomplish this engineering task. This paper will discuss an in-depth design of experiments using combinations of three different high speed connectors, three different dielectric materials and three different channel lengths. Data will be gathered with a 12-port vector network analyzer and the results will be presented in time domain, frequency domain and eye diagram domain.

Our Speaker:  Jack Carrel is a System IO Specialist at Xilinx. He has over 25 years of experience in product development and design in the fields of Instrumentation, Test and Measurement, and Telecommunications. His background includes development of electro-optic modules, Multi-gigabit transceiver boards, high speed and high resolution data acquisition systems for government and commercial applications. Most recently he has been involved in product design using multi-gigabit transceivers with specific focus on PCB design issues. He has published in several professional publications. Jack received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Co-Author:  Bill Dempsey is owner and president of Red Wire Enterprises, LLC which is a design services company focused on high frequency digital and RF design. His background includes design of military and commercial equipment for more than twenty years. He founded Red Wire Enterprises in 2001 to provide turn-key solutions for customers that include signal integrity, electromagnetic analysis, system design, and PCB layout. Bill received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1985. He is an active member of the IEEE Microwave and EMC societies. .
