Mr. Richard Remski, February guest speaker,
explains how an understanding of PC board resonance is useful in determining
component placement, one aspect of the presentation.
He discussed board resonances and determination of component placement based on using predicted resonance topology and showed the effect of capacitor parameters (ESL, ESR) as well as capacitor structure (single capacitors, sprinkled capacitors, capacitor arrays) on the impedance and resonances of the printed circuit power system. Simulation of the power systems and various capacitor configurations was performed using SIWave software, one of several analysis tools produced by Ansoft. He also showed comparative results between simulation using SIWave and actual test data of a telecom pc board. The meeting was held at NTS, Plano TX. NTS provided refreshments of pizza and soft drinks prior to the meeting. There were 26 attendees at the January meeting, 17 IEEE members and 9 non-IEEE members, including 3 new attendees. The door prize, an all-purpose hand tool provided by Ansoft, was won by Jim Wright. |
