The January 2004 meeting of the Dallas IEEE/EMC Society was held at NTS, Plano Texas, on January 20th, 2004. Pizza was provided by Kruvand Associates and Schaffner EMV AG, and soft drinks were provided by NTS. The meeting began with the introduction of the 2004 Officers. Minutes of the November 2003 meeting were read. It was mentioned, that the December 2003 activity was an informal get-together at Nedleys, in Richardson. The programs scheduled for 2004 were outlined. Mr. Wolfgang Klampfer, with Schaffner EMV AG, presented the program. He is manager of Schaffners Training Center in Luterbach Switzerland. His program was titled High-Frequency Filtering of DC Power Lines. He began by describing the regulatory requirements for a typical base station telecommunications facility. Noise sources and typical filtering schemes were described, for both common mode and differential mode problems. Filters characteristics were described, with the parasitic components that degrade the performance. The common interconnection techniques were described and their shortcomings. He then presented a new type of DC power connector that included an integral filter and very few junction points, thereby increasing reliability. Attenuation was good out to several GHz. Handouts of the overhead slides were provided, as well as CDs with the Schaffner Filter and Test Equipment product lines. After the technical presentation, Mr. Michael Wozniak of NTS sponsored a drawing and a nice gift from NTS was given away, to Mr. William Massoth. Also, Mr. Mark Bushnell and Mr. Bill Paschetag won drawings. There were 39 attendees, 21 IEEE members and 18 non-member attendees. Refreshments were served from 6 until 7 PM. The meeting started about 7 PM and adjourned about 8:15 PM. Submitted by John Schroeder |
