Mr. Ken Martin, March guest speaker,
explains the process of selective electroless plating of plastic.
Traditional uses of metalized coatings on plastic have been to minimize RF radiated emissions or susceptibility to RF radiation. During the meeting, he discussed a more functional usage of precise three-dimensional metalization which allows placement of antenna structures, functional circuits and electrical interconnection directly on the plastic substrates. He discussed the integration of the above as a significant cost-reduction of the end-product. He presented comparative shielding performance data for different plating thickness of aluminum vacuum deposition and conductive paints. The meeting was held at ITS, Richardson TX. Cybershield and ITS provided refreshments of pizza and soft drinks prior to the meeting. There were 26 attendees at the January meeting, 13 IEEE members and 13 non-IEEE members, including 6 new attendees. Several door prizes were given, including a Braden Shielding wall clock provided by Byrt Scammel (AirRep Electronics) won by S. Kamble, and four Cybershield golf shirts, won by Bob Shoffstall, Fred Lusen, Mike Cantwell, and Mark Szewczul. |
