The eighth and final monthly meeting of 2003 of the Dallas IEEE/EMC Society was held at NEMKO, Lewisville, Texas, on November 18th, 2003. Pizza was provided by Flometrics and soft drinks were provided by NEMKO. NEMKO handled arrangements for the refreshments. Minutes of the October 2003 meeting were read and approved. Prior to the technical presentation of the meeting, EMC Chapter officers were elected for 2004. The nominees for chapter officers, Mark Szewczul (Chair), Will Lumpkins (Vice Chair and Program Chairman) and John Schroeder (Secretary/Treasurer) were recommended by a nominating committee composed of past chapter chairs Val Erwin, Mark Bushnell and Gary Shimko. The nominees were elected by unanimous vote of the attendees. The subject of the meeting was System Level EMC Simulation Using the TLM Method, presented by Dr. David Johns, Vice President, Electromagnetic Engineering, Flomerics, Southborough MA. There were 17 attendees, 11 IEEE members and 6 non-IEEE attendees, including 5 new attendees. Dr. Johns discussed the general concept of the Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) and the application of TLM analysis (Flo-EMC) to real world EMC control, specifically air vent holes, connectors and slits formed at the interface of an access cover to case. To add further insight into how the analysis works, he discussed how small holes in both thin and thick materials were modeled for the TLM analysis. He stated that EMC scans of circuit cards can be interfaced with the TLM simulation to assist in trouble shooting problem boards. He demonstrated how Flo-EMC can identify problem areas around heat sinks with various grounding configurations and how it can be used to identify cavity resonance. Flomerics also has thermo analysis software (Flo-therm) which utilizes the same board and module design input data as Flo-EMC. Refreshments were served from 6 until 7 PM. The meeting started about 7 PM and adjourned about 9:00 PM. |
